Ahh the County that I live in

Sierra County sits in the reddest district in the state of California. My dad’s colleague actually referred to California as the state filled with fruits and nuts. I don’t think he was referring to the agriculture economy here.

Apparently this year is an election year where many of the county posts are up for re-election. So far, we’ve gotten campaign letters and house visits from the candidates for superior judge. Last night we got campaign letters from the candidates for district 2 supervisor seat for Sierra County. The two that we know of right now is the incumbent Peter H. and challenger Todd S. Peter H. (from his campaign letter) talks about social responsibility, activism, and proper stewardship of the natural resources that is abundant in Sierra County. His challenger chose the Gl*nn-B@ck-Fire-and-brimstone method. Our dear Todd S. believes that the economics slump in Sierra County can be alleviated by logging. He believes that “with 1.6 billion board feet of timber in Northern California forests every year over the last 12 to 15 years, there is no reason for our local economy to fail.” So, in his humble opinion, the county should not go “along with every frivolous environmental action that emasculates our ability to harvest timber and other resources...” He goes on saying that he believes it’s the duty of the USFS to use it’s legal department to shut up the “Monday morning quarterbacks” (yes, he did say that)...”once and for all.” yes...he did say that too.

Todd S.’s campaign letter goes on (and this is the cherry on top not because of it’s tea party-esque sentiment, but the fact that it sort of doesn’t make sense).

“We must work together to cure a troubling form of mental illness known as "environmentalism’.  The obvious cure for this particular malady that has had a massive negative effect on the public’s ability to conduct its business is a thing called ‘conservation’.” - Todd S. candidate for Supervisor District 2 Sierra County.

Well, if DSM-V calls “environmentalism” a mental disorder, then it must be the entry next to “tea party-ism”. But looking closely at what he wrote, i really wonder if he meant what he meant? So, here’s the question du jour....Should I stay as I am, someone who believes in “conservation” of the natural resources and proper stewardship of the land, or become a conservative ‘Merican?

Needless to say, he will not be getting our vote.....because we have the mental disorder of “environmentalism”.....quick get me my fucitol pills.

More Planning....

Seriously? How much work can planning a wedding be? Even a small one?

Famous last words...list of things to do. the list may be tiny, but there is a lot of detail packed into it.

but things are progressing. i have folks that will make sure i get stuff done. so with that said.....

i got (tentatively) a caterer and a photo person. this really means that the caterer is open on the special date and we just have to talk to him to plan things out.

i need to meet up with the ranger that runs the park and talk to her about event details....

my wedding website is almost done. just need to fix a few details...ie. add an rsvp form, etc.

the wedding invite is almost done.....

i bet there’s more....

there is always more....

storm total: 4cm        (new storm system)
        area: tanal peak, happy valley.

we hiked towards tanal peak with the goal of summiting the thing and then skiing down something in the area called happy valley. we wanted to head to an area that isn’t too steep (35+) and would have enough stuff that twelve people and tear it up. it snowed the entire day and powder was light, deep and sick. our groups yo-yo-ed a section of the the valley. we were socked in the whole day. not much sun...very little photos..but we got deep sick pow!

day five....3/30/10
        avi forecast: high
        weather forecast: 100% snow
        snow accumulation: 7cm
        area: cafe latte, i think.

and it’s still snowing. really. so we decide to hit up the trees again. somewhere close to the hut. so we went across the lake (that’s next to the hut) and did four runs. i’m not sure what the name of the area was, but it was sooo good. and it snowed the whole day. i had a shit-eating grin on my face the entire time. yes, even on the hikes up. :D

day six.....3/31/10
        avi forecast: considerable
        weather forecast:         partly cloudy, flurries.
        snow accumulation: 7cm
        area: unnamed peak, beaujolais

and we see some sun....we hiked over to an unnamed peak next to mt. john carter [the name of that peak was probably named after the guy, but there are some funny names here]. there is a ridge called mega-sore-ass ridge. named as a play off staga-sore-ass ridge that is not too far from [insert name here]. the prominent features in the area is definitely the battleship [literally looks like the profile of a battleship] and the pyramid [literally looks like a triangle] and the kokanee glacier above that. given our semi-good forecast and avi conditions, we decided to bag a peak and see what’s good from a higher vantage point. the hike up was decent. we had a little bit of a tense moment when the skin tracks we laid “whomped” or settled, as in the slope we were on sank under six people. moving in a group of 12 may not have been the best idea. at that point, we spread out the group.
the views from the top of the peak was spectacular. we were a little over 2000ft above the hut.

skyward ho!

we skied down (descending about 600ft) to the saddle and had lunch there. we were now on top of the area called beaujolais. after lunch, we skied (i rode) a 1400ft run down to the bottom. it was hard to get the shit-eating grin off our faces so another run was in order. we climbed back up and did another 800ft run. a group of us headed back to the hut after the second run. it was good and we were tired. it was a good day.

day seven......4/1/10
        avi forecast: considerable
weather forecast:         partly cloudy with 30% snow
        snow accumulation: 3cm
        storm total: 30cm
        area: the hut....

rest day!!! much needed rest. i think i can really only go two days on. i could feasibly go three days on, but i think i would be pretty gosh darn slow. i’m stiff, i feel everything, i’m sore, i ache. plus, it’s nice to have a day to read (i already finished three books) and putter and write the tr, edit photos, or nap....the possibilities are endless.

went out to the slocan chief cabin for a nice an easy tour and to check out the interpretive display in the cabin. for the winter, a lot of the displays were put away. it’s a bit of area history, from the mining times (pre-park days) to when the place became a park and then to the folks who tended it and did a lot of the development of it. it was a pretty neat tour, with teh sun peeking out from the clouds every once in awhile.
